Finding The Right Engine Oil For Your Vehicle

Engine Oil is the core of your Vehicles Engine. It plays a vital role in keeping all of the moving parts in your engine running smoothly, efficiently and most importantly with reliability. Before we get into the finer details lets understand the basics.

What is Engine Oil and what does it do?

Engine Oil reduces friction between the metal surfaces, cools the internal components of the engine, cleans therefore protecting against corrosion and sealing any small gaps between the other vehicle components.

Why is engine oil important for my car?

To answer this question, it is easier to understand what would happen if we imagined our vehicle without it. As Engine Oil forms a thin protective film between surfaces without this all the metal components would grind together, quickly causing the vehicle to overheat and cause severe damage within minutes!

As our vehicle runs it creates an enormous amount of heat. This is maintained to a safe operating temperature using Engine Oil.

How often should I change my engine oil?

This question is dependent on a few different factors. The main one being that it depends on your Vehicles Manufacture Guidelines. Some Vehicles recommend an oil change every:

5,000 to 7,500 miles for conventional oil

7,500 to 10,000 miles for synthetic oil

This is also dependent on the type of Oil you are using and the driving conditions. You should change your engine oil more often in severe conditions, for example in heavy city driving where you are stopping and starting frequently.

TIP: Don’t forget to change the Oil Filter with every oil change. The filter is important to change as it traps debris, if this builds up, dirty oil will circulate through the engine.

What’s the difference between synthetic, semi-synthetic, and conventional oil?

Conventional Oil – Derived from Crude Oil it breaks down faster and needs more frequent changes as it breaks down faster. Perfect for standard driving conditions

Semi-synthetic oil – This type of oil is a blend of conventional mineral oil and synthetic. Often lasts longer and offers better protection.

Fully Synthetic Oil – Is a man made lubricant. It is engineered to provide durability, great protection and perfect for severe driving conditions.

How do I know which engine oil to use for my car?

Choosing the right engine oil is essential for protecting your engine. The correct oil depends on your vehicle manufacturers specifications, oil viscosity and the driving conditions.

You should check your Owners Manual this will specify the exact oil grade and type recommended for your engine.

TIP: The engine oil specification may appear in your Owners Manual as follows; 5W-30 meeting API SP / ACEA C3

What are the signs that I need an oil change?

If your vehicle is running low on oil a warning light will appear on your dashboard. When changing oil the colour tells you how old it is. Fresh oil is a golden brown colour whereas darker oil contains soot and debris. You can check for this as follows;

  1. Pull out dipstick
  2. Wipe and reinsert to check the colour of the oil
  3. The darker the oil, the more in need of a change
