New Drivers What Do I Need and How To Stay Safe

Getting your drivers license is a huge milestone – it’s your ticket to freedom! However, for new drivers it also comes with new challenges. The weather, other drives and wildlife can be unpredictable.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about how to stay safe and what you should always have in your vehicle to ensure a safe journey.

What documents should I always carry when driving?

Documentation is important to carry with you on all journeys not only for peace of mind, but it is also a legal requirement in many countries. So, what should you take with you?

We have some recommended Travel Accessories HERE for anyone who is learning to drive!

1.      Driving License – It seems simple enough to remember but people often forget to take this with them! Your valid license proves you are legally allowed to drive the vehicle. Police may ask to view this, and it also is a way for people to identify you if ever you have an accident.

2.      Vehicle Registration Documentation – This proves your vehicle is registered and contains the owner’s information, vehicle registration, VIN, engine size and colour.

3.      Proof of insurance – Although it’s not a necessity to carry with you, you must be able to provide them if Police require them.

4.      MOT Certificate – This confirm that your vehicle has met the road safety standards.

TIP – It’s recommended to also bring emergency contact details, medical information you may need and breakdown cover with you.

What should I adjust before setting off on my journey?

Before setting off it is important you make some adjustments to your vehicle to make it a smooth journey. We recommend visiting our Interior Car Accessories to make your journey more comfortable HERE!

1.      Seat Position – Not only do you need to be comfortable but you also need to comfortably be able to reach pedals without stretching. You also need to adjust the seat height so you have a clear unobstructed view of the dashboard and road. For airbag safety you should at least be 10 – 12 inches away from the steering wheel.

2.      Steering Wheel – Adjust the steering wheel up or down so your hands are resting comfortably at the 9 and 3 o’clock position.

3.      Mirrors – Ensure to adjust your rear view mirror you should be able to see the entire rear window. Then adjust your side mirror, you should be able to only see a small part of your vehicle and a wider view of the road beside you.

4.      Headrest – This should be comfortable covering the back of your head. It is imperative as it will protect you against whiplash if you have an accident.

5.      Climate Controls – Adjust the air conditioning accordingly. Yor window must stay clear with no fog before driving.

6.      Seatbelt  - Avoid wearing any thick coats that may loosen your seatbelt.

7.      Entertainment or Navigation – Set your music or navigation settings before driving as this can be distracting!

In the event of an emergency we recommend that you bring with you these essential items;

Remember it takes practice and patience to become a confident driver but safety should always come first!
