What is the screen wash warning symbol?

The screen wash warning light indicates low washer fluid. This will appear as an amber warning on your dashboard. It often displays a car windscreen with a spray of water. Although you can continue driving you must ensure you are able to see out of your windscreen clearly before driving.

What can you use for screen wash – can I just use water?

While it may seem cheaper and easier to top up your washer reservoir with plain water, there are several reasons we don’t recommend this;

1.      Insufficient Cleaning Ability – Screen wash is formulated with high quality detergents that break down grime. Water alone isn’t effective at removing bugs, grease, road salt and oily residues.

2.      Freezing Risk in Cold Weather – In colder weather the water can freeze inside the vehicle’s jets, pipes and reservoir potentially causing cracks and blockages.

3.      Bacteria & Algae – When water sits for too long especially during warmer months it harbours bacteria and is a breeding ground for bacteria, algae and mould.

4.      Reduced Visibility – Without the right cleaning ingredients water leaves smears and marks as its not cleaning the dirt of the windscreen. Therefore you will have poor visibility.
