Here’s what you need to check before your MOT:

• Lights & Indicators – Make sure headlights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights, and number plate lights all work properly.

• Tyres & Wheels – Check tread depth (minimum 1.6mm) and look for damage, bulges, or uneven wear.

• Brakes – Ensure brakes respond correctly and listen for unusual noises or vibrations.

• Windscreen & Wipers – Look for cracks or chips and make sure wipers and washers function fully.

• Fluids – Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windscreen washer levels.

• Seat Belts – All seat belts should be in good condition and work properly.

• Exhaust & Emissions – No leaks, and the car shouldn’t produce excessive smoke.

• Steering & Suspension – Steering should feel smooth, and suspension shouldn’t be damaged or leaking.

• Horn & Mirrors – Both should be fully functional and secure.

• Bodywork & Chassis – Check for rust, sharp edges, or other damage that could affect safety.

How Long Is An MOT Certificate Valid?

A successful MOT Certificate is valid 12 months from the date it was tested.


How Is An MOT Marked?

An MOT test is graded as either “pass” or “fail”, depending on the condition of your vehicle and its compliance with road safety and environmental standards. Inspectors look for defects in key areas, which are classified into three categories:

1. Dangerous Defects – These are serious safety issues that make the vehicle unsafe to drive. Examples include faulty brakes, broken steering components, or worn tyres. A dangerous defect results in an automatic fail, and the car cannot be driven until fixed, except to a pre-booked repair or testing location.

2. Major Defects – These are serious problems that could affect safety or emissions, but the vehicle might still be able to reach a garage for repairs. A major defect also results in failure. Examples include leaks in the braking system or worn suspension components.

3. Minor Defects / Advisories – These are less serious issues that don’t cause a fail but are noted on your MOT certificate. Advisories highlight areas that may need attention in the near future, such as slightly worn tyres or a chipped windscreen.


What Happens If I Fail My MOT?

If your car fails its MOT, it means it has one or more defects that do not meet legal safety or environmental standards. The test centre will give you a detailed list of problems classified as dangerous, major, or minor (advisories).

Key points to know if your car fails:

• You cannot drive the car on public roads if it has dangerous defects, except to a pre-booked repair or MOT retest location.

• Major defects also mean your car fails the test and must be repaired before it can pass.

• Minor defects (advisories) don’t cause a fail, but you should fix them to avoid future problems.

• Retesting is required after repairs. Many garages offer partial retests at a reduced cost if the vehicle is repaired at the same location.

• Your MOT certificate will not be issued until all fail items are corrected and the vehicle passes the retest.
